Hello, savvy globetrotters! Katy Thompson here, your trusted travel agent from Gallivanters Vacations and I’m always thinking about your next amazing journey. More importantly, I’m thinking about how to make sure that journey is safe and sound!

While travel is exciting, staying safe is key to enjoying every moment. I’ve gathered my top 10 travel safety tips to help you explore with confidence. These tips will help you protect yourself and your belongings. Let’s make your next vacation package worry-free!

1. Be Smart About Public Wi-Fi & Bluetooth

First, a big one for digital safety. Public Wi-Fi networks in airports or cafes are convenient. However, they are often not secure, so don’t use them. But, if you must, avoid logging into banking apps or sensitive accounts on these networks. Also, turn off your phone’s Bluetooth when you’re not using it. This prevents unwanted connections to your device. Avoid using public USB charging ports because of a scam called “Port Jacking”.  Always use your charging block.

2. Guard Against Pickpockets

Unfortunately, pickpockets exist in crowded tourist areas. Therefore, be extra aware of your surroundings. Keep wallets in front pockets. Use a cross-body bag that zips. Also, avoid flashy jewelry. Never keep valuables in your back pockets. Wear your backpack facing forward in crowded areas.

3. Research Your Destination & Local Scams

Before you go, do your homework! Learn about common scams in your chosen destination. For example, some cities have fake taxi drivers. Others might have street vendors who overcharge. Just outside money exchanges are hotspots for currency scams and pickpockets. Knowing these tricks helps you avoid them. A great resource for general country information and travel advisories is the U.S. Department of State website.

4. Secure Your Valuables (and Don’t Flash Cash!)

Carry only what you need each day. A lanyard is perfect for carrying ID, a credit or debit card, and some cash. Leave extra cash, credit cards, and passports in your hotel safe. Also, distribute your money. Keep some in your wallet, some in a separate place. Avoid showing large amounts of cash in public.

5. Be Wary of Vehicle-Related Scams

When using taxis or ride-shares, be cautious. Always use official taxi stands or, book through reputable apps. Be sure to use pre-booked transport. Confirm the driver’s ID before getting in.

6. Share Your Itinerary

Tell a trusted friend, family member, or your trusted travel agent, your travel plans. Share your flight details, hotel names, and expected dates. This way, someone always knows where you are.  It provides a safety net.

7. Blend In, Don’t Stand Out

While you’re excited to be a tourist, try not to look too much like one. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry. Do not carry too much camera gear openly. Try to dress somewhat like the locals. This makes you less of a target.

8. Trust Your Gut Instincts

If a situation feels off, it probably is. Your intuition is a powerful safety tool. If someone or something makes you feel uneasy, simply remove yourself from the situation. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

9. Have Emergency Contacts & Important Documents Ready

Before you leave, save emergency numbers. This includes local police, your hotel, and your country’s embassy. Keep physical and digital copies of your passport, visas, and reservations. Store them in a separate place from your originals. You can also consider enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for U.S. citizens.

10. Invest in Travel Insurance

Finally, I always recommend travel insurance. This is for more than just lost luggage. It covers medical emergencies. It also helps with trip cancellations. It provides a crucial safety net for unexpected events. It gives you peace of mind.
