Lifefitness treadmills on a cruise ship

Hello, health-conscious travelers! I am Alan Thompson, your travel advisor here at Gallivanters Vacations.

I have been a personal trainer for over 25 years. Over the years, I have helped hundreds of clients reach their peak physical condition. People often ask me how I maintain my fitness while traveling to the world’s most decadent all-inclusive resorts. The answer isn’t a “magic pill” or a secret tea. It is discipline and a rock-solid plan.

We all know the “all-inclusive trap.” You arrive at a beautiful resort in Mexico or the Caribbean. Suddenly, you have 24-hour access to unlimited tacos, sugary margaritas, and chocolate lava cakes. Research shows that a typical guest can consume over 5,000 calories a day at these resorts. That is twice the recommended amount for most adults!

But you don’t have to come home five pounds heavier. In 2026, many luxury resorts like AVA Resort Cancun or Hyatt Ziva offer world-class fitness centers that rival the best gyms in the U.S. You just need to walk in with a strategy. Here is my “Trainer-Approved” plan to avoid weight gain on your next all-inclusive getaway.

1. Commit to the “Daily Sweat”

In my 25 years of training, I learned that consistency beats intensity every time. You don’t need to spend three hours in the gym, but you must move your body every single day.

  • The Plan: Dedicate 45-60 minutes each morning to a workout.

  • The Discipline: Train in the morning, before the day gets going. It’s too easy to talk yourself out of it once the fun has begun.

    • Bonus: I don’t eat breakfast until I have completed my session. While the theory that “fasted training” movement helps your body tap into stored energy, has not held up in scientific testing, it is my preferred training style. For some people, this method can make them a little woozy. Find what works for you.

  • The 2026 Edge: Many resorts now offer high-end classes like Aqua-Cycling or Beach HIIT. If you find the treadmill boring, join a group class. The social energy will keep you accountable and it’s a scheduled event.

  • Alan’s Tip: “Understand that you can’t out train a bad diet…..but, it helps.”

2. The 20,000 Step Challenge

At home, you might struggle to hit 10,000 steps. On vacation, you have the time to double it! Walking is the most underrated tool in weight management.

  • The Plan: Hit 20,000 steps before your head hits the pillow.

  • The Discipline: Skip the golf cart shuttles that roam the resort grounds. Walk to the beach. Walk to dinner. Take the stairs instead of the elevator.

  • Alan’s Tip: Explore the coastline. A long walk on the sand burns significantly more calories than walking on a flat pavement. Plus, the view of the turquoise water makes the miles fly by.

    • Bonus: I set a goal of 5K before breakfast. That’s usually a 45-60 minute walk for me to hit those numbers. It gives me jump on the day and gets my mind right!

3. One “Perfect” Nutritional Meal per Day

You are on vacation, so you shouldn’t feel deprived. However, you cannot eat “junk” for three meals a day and expect to stay lean.

  • The Plan: Ensure at least one meal is nutritionally perfect. For most, this is breakfast or lunch.

  • Alan’s Tip: For me this is an easy choice for breakfast. Eggs or an omelet and a side of fruit, makes for a light perfect start to the day.
  • The Discipline: This meal should consist of lean protein (like grilled chicken or egg whites) and massive amounts of greens (if at lunch or supper). Skip the dressing, the cheese, and the croutons.

  • The 2026 Edge: Most 2026 menus now feature a “Wellness” or “Plant-Based” section. These dishes use high-quality, whole ingredients that fill you up without the calorie bloat.

4. The “One Dessert” Rule

The dessert stations at all-inclusive resorts are beautiful. They feature tiny cakes, colorful mousses, and unlimited ice cream.

  • The Plan: You get one dessert per meal, but only if you follow the “One Trip” rule (see below).

  • The Discipline: Choose the one thing you truly want. Do not take “one of everything” just because it is free.

  • Alan’s Tip: Share! If you want to taste three different things, share them with your partner. You get the flavor satisfaction with only a third of the calories.

5. The “One Trip” Buffet Strategy

The buffet is where most diets go to die. The “all-you-can-eat” mindset triggers a survival instinct in our brains to over-consume.

  • The Plan: You are allowed only one trip to the buffet line per meal. No seconds. No thirds.

  • The Discipline: Use a standard-sized dinner plate. Fill half of it with vegetables first. Use the remaining half for your protein and a small portion of starch.

  • The Logic: When you know you only get one plate, you become much more selective. You pick the foods you actually enjoy instead of “grazing” on items you don’t even like.

Comparing High-Fitness Resorts for 2026

Resort Name Fitness Highlight Best Feature
AVA Resort Cancun 11,000 sq ft FIIT Center Massive space with elite equipment
Hyatt Ziva Cancun Oceanfront Gym Best views while on the treadmill
Royalton CHIC “Royalton Fit” Program Daily classes with certified trainers
Secrets The Vine 24/7 Modern Access Great for very early risers

The Hidden Enemy: “Liquid Calories”

As a trainer, I have seen more progress ruined by cocktails and beer, than by cake. A single piña colada or mud slide can contain 650 calories. If you drink four of those by the pool, you have consumed a whole day’s worth of calories before dinner!

  • The Discipline: Switch to “Clean Cocktails.” Order a vodka soda with fresh lime or a light beer.

  • Hydration Rule: Drink 16 ounces of water for every alcoholic beverage you consume. This prevents dehydration and keeps your metabolism from stalling. A mud slide at the schooner bar on a royal caribbean cruise ship
