I hear from many clients planning their 2026 trips. They all ask about new airport rules. I have a very important update for anyone flying domestically in the United States starting next year. You need to pay attention to your ID!

The biggest change coming soon is a new fee at airport security. If you do not have the right identification, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will charge you to fly.

Let’s ensure you travel stress-free, save your money, and get to your vacation destination on time!

🛑 The New 2026 Rule: A $45 Fee is Coming

The REAL ID Act has been in the news for years. Many people still do not have a compliant ID. Now, the TSA confirms a new procedure for travelers without the proper documents.

The change takes effect on February 1, 2026.

If you are 18 or older and fly without a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification, you will face a new charge. The TSA will charge you a $45 fee. This fee is non-refundable.

This money pays for the special alternative identity verification system. The TSA calls it Confirm.ID. This system is slow and takes time away from security screening. They expect you to cover that cost.

What Happens If You Do Not Pay?

You must pay the fee to use the Confirm.ID service. You risk major delays if you show up without an acceptable ID. This process can take up to 30 minutes at the airport. You could easily miss your flight.

Important Note: The fee only covers a 10-day travel period. You must pay it again if you fly after that 10-day window without a REAL ID.

How to Avoid the REAL ID Fee

You can completely skip the new fee and verification delays! Simply ensure you present one of the following forms of identification at the security checkpoint:

1. Get a REAL ID-Compliant Driver’s License

This is the most common solution. A compliant license shows a star or a flag in the corner. Visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to upgrade your current card. They require extra documents like proof of residency and your Social Security number.

2. Use Your Passport

A valid U.S. Passport Book or Passport Card is a federally recognized ID. It works perfectly for domestic flights. If you travel internationally, you already have the right ID!

3. Use Another Acceptable Federal ID

The TSA accepts several other forms of ID. These include:

  • U.S. Permanent Resident Cards (Green Card)

  • Trusted Traveler Cards (like Global Entry)

  • U.S. Department of Defense IDs
