Ahoy, adventurers! Katy Thompson from Gallivanters Vacations here, and today we’re setting sail for a land where dragons roam the skies and Viking spirit fills the air: the Isle of Berk, straight out of DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon, at Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe! Prepare to be transported to a world of craggy cliffs, charming Viking architecture, and, of course, magnificent dragons. This isn’t just a themed area; it’s a vibrant, breathing island teeming with adventure!

Stepping onto the Isle of Berk

As you step onto the Isle of Berk, you’ll be immediately struck by the immersive detail. Towering rock formations create a dramatic backdrop, Viking ships appear weathered and ready for their next voyage, and the air hums with the sounds of blacksmithing and distant dragon roars. It truly feels like you’ve stepped right into the beloved films. Keep an eye out for familiar details – Hiccup’s workshop, the Great Hall, and other iconic locations brought to life with incredible accuracy. The atmosphere is one of rugged charm and untamed wilderness, perfectly capturing the spirit of Berk.

Feasting Like a Viking: Food and Drink

After a day of dragon training and aerial adventures, even the toughest Viking needs to refuel! The Isle of Berk offers hearty and flavorful fare inspired by the land and its inhabitants. Here’s a taste of what you can expect:

  • The Mead Hall: This will likely be the main dining location, a bustling and boisterous hall where you can feast like a true Viking. Expect hearty, family-style meals with roasted meats, stews, and plenty of bread. Imagine sinking your teeth into a massive roasted chicken or a steaming bowl of hearty stew after a thrilling flight!
  • Hooligan’s Grog and Gruel: Thirsty Vikings will find a variety of drinks, from non-alcoholic options like “Coca-Cola” Freestyle ($4.79) to some themed alcoholic beverages for the adults like Carlsberg Danish Lager ($12.25).
  • Spit Fyre Grill: This is one of the best places to eat in any of the Universal Parks, and this is probably my favorite in Epic. Entrees are a simple bowl concept; pick your protein: steak, salmon, chicken, or shrimp. Yes, they also do a vegan bowl. I went with the shrimp bowl, and it was amazing. But, by far the best food I had at the park was the “Dragon Fire Chicken Spyre.” This is one of several Mac’n cheese cone options. The bread cone was light and had a crispness on the edge with a hint of garlic. The chicken had a little spice, but wasn’t overpowering, and was nicely balanced with mac’n cheese. The Dragon Fire Chicken Spyre is a must. If you only get one food on the Isle of Berk, make it the Dragon Fire!

Take Flight! The Thrilling Rides of the Isle of Berk!

Now, for the moment you’ve been waiting for – the chance to soar with dragons! The Isle of Berk promises unique and exhilarating rides that will make you feel like you’re part of Hiccup’s gang:

  • Hiccup’s Wing Gliders: This family-friendly coaster is designed to make you feel like you’re flying alongside dragons! Once your wings are added to the innovative ride vehicle, you’ll experience the sensation of soaring and swooping through the air. While the top speed is likely in the range of 30-40 mph, the focus here is on the feeling of flight – gentle launches, banked turns, and close calls with the Berk landscape. Families with children, fans of the How to Train Your Dragon films, and anyone who enjoys a thrilling but not overly intense coaster experience will fall in love with this ride.
  • Dragon Racers: Reach new heights on this circling ride. Board your dragon and fly in formation at low to moderate speeds. This is a great ride to build confidence in young dragon riders, especially those that may try to shy away from heights. This ride definitely gives you some of the best views of the park and really brings the scale of the park to life.
  • Fyre Drill: Get ready for a wet and wild adventure on this boat ride! You’ll board Viking ships and compete in a friendly (but splashy!) water cannon shooting Viking cruise. This interactive experience will put your dragon training skills to the test! The speed won’t be a factor here, but the feeling will be one of teamwork, excitement, and a sense of accomplishment as you help protect Berk! This is a great ride for the whole family to enjoy.
  • Viking Training Camp: Simply… an awesome Viking-themed playground. Fun for Vikings of all ages.
