How to Get in Shape for a Vacation When You’re Completely Out of Shape
You finally booked the trip.
Maybe you are heading to Europe, embarking on a bucket-list cruise to Alaska, taking the family to Disney, or maybe Universal Studios. Then reality hits: “There’s going to be a lot of walking.”, “We’re going to be doing this for several days.”, “Am I actually in good enough shape to enjoy this vacation?”
If you are out of shape, overweight, older, or simply not active right now, that question can feel uncomfortable. But, if you’re asking that question, the answer is going to be painful. Here is the good news: you don’t need to become an NFL linebacker, Arnold Schwarzenegger, or a triathlete before your trip. You only need to prepare your body for the activities your specific itinerary will require.
As a travel advisor and fitness professional with over 25 years in the fitness industry, my goal is simple: help you choose and prepare for a vacation that you can enjoy instead of endure.
Why Vacations Can Be Harder on Your Body Than You Expect
Many travelers think, “I walk every day, so I’ll be fine.” However, travel combines several physical demands at once. You might walk through massive airports, stand in endless security lines, pull luggage, climb steep stairs, navigate cobblestones, and repeat it all the next day on minimal sleep. On my last trip to Universal Studios, we averaged 35,000 steps and over 15 miles of walking per day. That’s no “walk in the park”.
Your goal is not to train for a marathon. Your goal is to train for your itinerary.
Start With Your Trip, Not a Treadmill
Before you begin exercising, look at your upcoming travel plans and ask yourself:
- How much walking will I do daily?
- Will I encounter hills or historic stairs?
- How long will I need to stand during tours?
- Will I carry a backpack or day bag?
- Will I have several active days in a row?
This basic analysis is necessary for proper exercise selection, duration, and intensity.
The Four Fitness Areas Every Traveler Should Train
You do not need a complicated, intimidating gym routine. Focus your preparation on four fundamental areas:
- Walking Endurance: Building the ability to cover more ground comfortably.
- Leg & Core Strength: Providing power for stairs, hills, and long days on your feet.
- Balance & Stability: Navigating uneven sidewalks, curbs, and unfamiliar terrain.
- Recovery: Handling one active day and waking up feeling ready for the next.
How to Start Walking When You Are Starting From Zero
Walking is the absolute best way to prepare for travel. Beginners must balance minimal effort and the mistake of doing too much too soon, by finding the Goldie Locks zone of training. Start with a comfortable amount of time—even if it is just 10 minutes a day—and build consistency.
A Simple 4-Week Beginner Walking Progression may look like:
- Week 1: Walk 10 minutes, 4 days a week.
- Week 2: Walk 12–15 minutes, 4 days a week.
- Week 3: Walk 15–20 minutes, 4 days a week.
- Week 4: Walk 20–25 minutes, 4–5 days a week.
Remember: Consistency always beats a single heroic workout.

Alan’s Universal Essential Travel Fitness Tips:
- Test Your Travel Shoes Early: Never break in brand-new shoes on the first day of your trip. Wear them during your training walks to catch hot spots and blisters before you leave home.
- Practice With Your Day Bag: Your suitcase stays in the hotel room, but your day bag goes everywhere. Practice carrying a light pack during some of your walks so your shoulders, lower-back, core, and joints get used to the extra weight.
- Train for Stairs: Elevators are not guaranteed in historic cities, cruise ships, or train stations. Safely incorporate low step-ups or controlled stair climbing into your routine.
