Katy’s Top 5 Tips for Taking a Toddler to Universal Studios
Hi everyone! I am Katy Thompson, your lead travel advisor at Gallivanters Vacations. If you follow my blog, you know I love a good theme park challenge. Lately, I have heard one question more than any other: “Katy, am I crazy for taking my toddler to Universal Studios Orlando?”
The short answer is: No, you are not crazy! Many parents think Universal is only for teenagers and Harry Potter fans. While the big coasters get the most fame, Universal is actually a toddler paradise. You just need a solid game plan. I recently went with my nephew to the parks to test out the best strategies. Today, I am sharing my top five insider tips to help you survive and thrive.
Let’s turn that potential “toddler meltdown” into a magical memory!
1. Master the Art of the “Child Swap”
Universal Studios has the best “Child Swap” program in the industry. Most theme parks make one parent wait outside in the hot sun. Universal does things differently.
Every major attraction has a dedicated, air-conditioned Child Swap room. Usually, these rooms feature a TV playing movies related to the ride. Your entire family enters the queue together. When you reach the front, one parent stays in the room with the toddler. The rest of the group rides. Then, you simply switch places!
This system is a game-changer. It means you don’t have to miss out on Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure just because your two-year-old isn’t tall enough.
2. Prioritize Seuss Landing and DreamWorks Land
If you want to see your toddler’s eyes light up, head straight to Seuss Landing in Islands of Adventure. Everything in this land is “curved,” just like in the books. There are no straight lines!
Toddlers love the Caro-Seuss-el. They can ride strange creatures rather than just horses. Also, The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride! offers a great view of the park.
Over at Universal Studios Florida, the new DreamWorks Land is a must. Your little ones can meet Shrek, play in Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp, and ride the Trolls Trollercoaster. These areas are designed specifically for smaller guests. They offer plenty of shade and “splash pads” to cool off.
3. Rent a Stroller (Even if they Walk at Home)
This is my most practical piece of advice. At home, your toddler might be a champion walker. At Universal, you will easily walk five to seven miles in a single day. A stroller is an absolute must if you have a toddler. I do not recommend trying to take on any of the big parks without a stroller.
Stroller Rentals: On-Site vs. Outside Vendors
You can rent strollers directly at the entrance of both parks. They are sturdy, hard plastic carriages. They work well, but they do not leave the park(City Walk is part of the park). If you have a long walk to the parking garage or a resort boat, you might find yourself carrying a sleeping toddler at 9:00 PM.
Katy’s Pro-Tip: Know that you have options.
Option 1: Renting from a third-party vendor like Kingdom Strollers. 1-3 nights is $60 and 4-7 nights is $80. These vendors deliver a high-quality, padded stroller directly to your hotel. You can use it at the parks, at the resorts, and even at CityWalk. It provides a familiar, comfortable place for your child to nap.
Option 2: Bring a stroller. It’s a hassle getting it on and off the plane. Most airlines do not charge to bring strollers or car seats and they can usually be gate checked.
Option 3: Rent one at the park. They are $40 a day. They do provide a decent amount of shade from the sun. But not a lot of extra stowing capacity.
4. Use the “Secret” Character Spots
Character meet-and-greets can have long lines in the sun. However, toddlers often have a short fuse for waiting. I always tell my clients to look for the “secret” spots.
For example, the Character Party Zone near the front of Universal Studios often has characters from Despicable Me or The Secret Life of Pets. They often appear with much shorter wait times than the main hubs.
Also, don’t miss the Raptor Encounter. It sounds scary, but the trainers are fantastic. They can dial down the intensity if they see a nervous toddler. It makes for the best vacation photos!
5. Stay On-Site for the “Mid-Day Reset”
The Florida heat is real. By 2:00 PM, most toddlers (and parents!) are ready for a break. This is why I always suggest staying at a Universal Orlando Resort.
If you stay at Cabana Bay Beach Resort or Loews Sapphire Falls, you are just a quick boat ride or bus trip away. Go back to the hotel, let the kiddo nap in the AC, and hit the pool. You can return to the parks in the evening when the sun is lower.
Staying on-site also gives you Early Park Admission. You can enter the parks an hour before the general public. This hour is golden for toddlers. You can hit the popular spots before the crowds and the heat arrive.

Final Thoughts from Katy
Taking a toddler to Universal Studios is all about managing expectations. You might not ride every single coaster. You might spend two hours just watching the fountains in Seuss Landing. And that is okay! These are the years where the magic feels very real to them.
