Katy Thompson of Gallivanters Vacations looking over Nuremberg Germany during Christmas

When winter arrives, Germany transforms into a magical wonderland of festive cheer, glowing lights, and spiced mulled wine. For travelers planning a holiday getaway, two iconic Bavarian cities always top the list.

As a travel advisor, clients often ask me: Which has the better Christmas markets, Munich or Nuremberg?

Both cities offer incredible holiday cheer.  We know, because we’ve been there…a lot. However, Nuremberg takes the crown as the ultimate Christmas market destination. Munich still deserves a prominent spot on your European travel itinerary.

Let’s explore why Nuremberg wins the title, and why you should visit both historic cities on your next winter vacation.

Why Nuremberg Wins the Christmas Market Crown

Nuremberg hosts the world-famous Christkindlesmarkt, a tradition dating back to the mid-16th century. It sets the global gold standard for traditional holiday markets.

  • Historic Authenticity: The market sits inside the medieval Old Town under the shadow of Nuremberg Castle. Red-and-white-striped wooden stalls fill the cobblestone square, creating a postcard-perfect setting.

  • Strict Traditions: Nuremberg enforces strict rules to keep commercialism at bay. Vendors must sell traditional, locally crafted goods rather than mass-produced souvenirs.

  • The Famous Nuremberg Sausages: You cannot visit without trying the iconic Nürnberger Rostbratwürste. Market vendors roast them over open beech wood fires and serve them fresh off the grill inside a crispy hard roll—famously known as “Drei im Weggla” (Three in a Roll)—making them the ultimate warm, hand-held street food while you stroll through the festive stalls. These are a must try when you get there! Local bakers also serve the legendary spicy gingerbread (Lebkuchen), which smells incredible as you walk through the stalls.

  • The Christkind Opening: The market opens with a magical ceremony delivered by the Christkind, a “local angel” who recites a beloved traditional prologue. The grand opening of the Christkindlesmarkt takes place every year at 5:30 PM on the Friday before the first Sunday in Advent, held in the heart of Nuremberg’s central market square. The “local angel” is selected every 2 years, by local residents, who narrow the candidates down through an application process. Then a jury selects the final candidate based on warmth, town knowledge, and poise.

Why Munich Is Still Worth a Visit

While Nuremberg wins on historic charm, Munich delivers a grand, festive experience with a distinctly royal Bavarian flair.

  • The Stunning Backdrop: Munich’s main market fills the sprawling Marienplatz. The majestic neo-Gothic New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) creates a breathtaking backdrop for holiday shopping. Munich is full of iconic German architecture and you don’t have to be an architect to appreciate it.

  • Unique Neighborhood Markets: Munich spreads its holiday cheer across the entire city. You can explore the medieval-themed market at Wittelsbacher Platz or the cozy village vibe at the English Garden.

  • The Krampus Run: Munich hosts an annual Krampus run where wild, costumed performers re-enact ancient Alpine folklore through the streets. It offers a thrilling experience you will not find anywhere else. If you’re into the spooky and weird this is one that you want to miss. This year it will be from 3:00-5:00 on Dec. 13th. The parade starts at Frauenplatz/Augustinerstraße and finish at the Viktualienmarkt and the Old Town Hall.

  • Winter Tollwood Festival: If you want modern arts, organic food, and eclectic holiday tents, the Tollwood winter festival adds a vibrant contemporary twist to your trip. the Tollwood Winter Festival typically runs from November 24 through December 23. The “Market of Ideas” and food tents generally open daily around mid-afternoon (around 2:00 PM) and welcome visitors well into the evening for eco-friendly crafts, organic global dining, and independent theate

The Best Part: You Can Visit Both Easily

The greatest travel secret about these Bavarian cities is their proximity. They sit just an hour apart by high-speed train.

You do not have to choose just one destination. You can fly into Munich, spend a few days exploring its royal palaces and festive squares, and hop on a quick train ride north to Nuremberg for the ultimate market experience. Combining both cities creates the ultimate German holiday vacation.
